02Mistake: choosing a bit by trend or color

A flame, rounded flame, ball or rounded cylinder describes geometry, not guaranteed safety. Pointed flames demand precise control. Rounded profiles may be more forgiving, but they can still cause trauma through unsuitable abrasive level, pressure or repeated contact. Color bands must be interpreted within the manufacturer’s own system.

  • Define the task before choosing material or shape.
  • Match diameter and terminal profile to anatomy and visibility.
  • Separate diamond preparation bits from carbide or ceramic product-removal roles.
  • Confirm cutting direction and manufacturer guidance.
  • Replace bits that are damaged, corroded, clogged or losing performance.

03Mistake: correcting inefficiency with pressure

When a bit stops removing material efficiently, inexperienced operators often press harder, slow their movement over one point or repeat the same pass. This can increase friction, heat and loss of tactile control. The correct response is to stop and diagnose.

  1. Check the task

    Confirm that the bit is intended for the material or tissue being contacted.

  2. Check the bit

    Look for debris, dullness, coating loss, damaged flutes or an insecure shank.

  3. Check support and angle

    A floating hand and poor stabilization make light, predictable contact difficult.

  4. Check speed and movement

    Use the validated range for the bit and technique. Avoid stationary contact.

04Mistake: over-filing the natural nail

The natural plate does not need to be aggressively thinned for adhesion. Repeated passes, concentrated pressure and coarse or unsuitable tools can create grooves, sensitivity and structural weakness. A glossy area is not an invitation to continue filing until the entire plate looks identical.

05Mistake: treating depth and bleeding as quality

A clean-looking perimeter does not require intentional injury to living tissue. Over-lifting, entering beyond visible control, repeatedly polishing one area or cutting without a clear tissue distinction can cause abrasions and bleeding.

If bleeding occurs, stop work on the area and follow the required blood-exposure protocol. Discard contaminated single-use materials, isolate and correctly process reusable instruments, clean the workstation and reassess whether continuing is appropriate. 06Mistake: ignoring dust, skin contact and curing

Preparation is not complete when debris remains in lateral areas or on the plate. Dust can reduce visibility and interfere with product placement. At the same time, aggressive brushing that redistributes dust through the breathing zone is not an adequate control system. Use local extraction, appropriate cleaning and a clear separation between prepared and contaminated surfaces.

Gel touching skin can contribute to lifting and avoidable exposure to uncured ingredients. Remove accidental contact before curing and correct the application method. Do not attempt to solve flooding by removing more tissue. Use products and lamp systems according to manufacturer instructions, including compatible curing equipment and appropriate layer thickness.

07Mistake: confusing a clean-looking tool with a processed tool

Visible dust removal is only the beginning. OSHA advises cleaning reusable tools with soap and water before using an EPA-registered disinfectant according to the label and state rules. Single-use items must be discarded after the client. A UV storage box does not disinfect tools.

  • Separate used tools from clean and processed sets.
  • Clean hinges, flutes and complete working surfaces.
  • Measure and time disinfectants exactly as labeled.
  • Use sterilization, packaging and monitoring where required by local rules and instrument classification.
  • Keep processed tools protected until the next service.
  • Maintain enough duplicate sets for the complete cycle.
