Nail Apex

What the nail apex does

The apex is the highest point of the constructed nail when viewed from the side, but its purpose is structural rather than decorative. It should appear as part of a smooth curve, not as a separate mound placed on top of an otherwise flat nail.

Adapting architecture to length and shape

Short overlays usually require subtle reinforcement and a natural transition. As length increases, leverage increases and the architecture must be planned accordingly. Square shapes need clean sidewall alignment and a balanced free edge. Almond structures require symmetry, a controlled upper arch and a central line that does not twist.

Growth direction may require visual and structural correction. A downward-growing nail should not simply receive more product everywhere. An upward-growing nail may need a different lower-arch and free-edge decision. Dual forms also change placement because the product is shaped partly inside the form before application.

  • Placing the same apex at the same point on every length and shape.
  • Creating a high bump with flat transitions around it.
  • Adding thickness to correct weak sidewalls.
  • Leaving too much weight at the free edge.
  • Allowing self-leveling gel to move toward one side.
  • Filing away the structure that was just created.
  • Judging only from the top view.

How to evaluate the finished structure

Sidewalls should remain aligned, the free edge should not feel disproportionately heavy and the cuticle transition should be thin and clean.
